ROMAN ONDAK: SK Parking

After twenty years, Roman Ondak invites us to experience a reinstallation of his cult work SK Parking, a constellation of seven Škoda cars parked in a dead-end street beside Kunsthalle Bratislava. He invites us to think about the questions: in what way is this work, and on this very street, still topical today? Is there actually a still-existing abyss between East and West, which continues to remain a component of our geographical space; or ultimately, in fact, does it mirror the state of the building in front of which the work appears, and indeed of certain institutions within it?

NA HRANE / AT THE LIMIT / AM LIMIT

The exhibition NA HRANE / AT THE LIMIT / AM LIMIT explores borders and experiences associated with borderline situations through the background of works by 16 authors from six countries. Through the selection of artworks, the curators of the exhibition refer either to personal boundary experiences or to transgressive conditions created on the basis of certain artistic strategies or approaches. Borders mark an inside and an outside, they are form building contours for existential facts. Borders are dynamic and therefore never final, only death constitutes an ultimate border.

EMÍLIA RIGOVÁ: Čohaňi z Koni Ajlend. After Bári Raklóri

The social and personal message of the exhibition is clearly readable. Emília Rigová works with a reconstruction of cultural history and with the actuality of her own I; with the erased history of the Roma diaspora and the actual identity of a young woman – intellectual, artist, feminist. The format of the museum of art, adopted for her paradoxical “display” of paintings, encompasses a critical revision of the western history of art and culture.

THE POWER OF THE POWERLESS

November 1989 is an important political turning-point in the Slovak modern history, which has also essentially influenced the status of art in society. The newly-acquired freedom of expression enabled artists not only to present their works in public but also to express critical opinions. On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the November events Kunsthalle Bratislava has prepared The Power of the Powerless, an exhibition focused on art that critically reflects on social problems in the Slovak and Czech context.

The European history is full of examples of people having to leave their native lands to escape war and misery. Nowadays many immigrants set o on their odyssey until they get stuck. If they are rescued, they mostly get a space blanket as a first aid for immediate thermal relief. Since a few years in Berlin people started to use space blankets in demonstrations to protest against the upcoming fascism.

ORIENT2

Orient2 is a meditation on East European identity. The exhibition finds a unifying aspect in this ambiguous region: a contradictory but also complementary self-underestimation, and a simultaneous arrogance. These are two definitional positions of the region’s wounded identity. Suggesting that a suppressed inferiority complex is a possible reason for the recent upsurge of nationalism and non-democratic tendencies in Eastern Europe, the exhibition asks whether the failure in constituting and performing Eastern European identities, if it were accepted, could not be turned into a virtue.

Zorka Lednárová’s project visually combines a variety of scripts and symbolic systems.
