DENISA LEHOCKÁ: Untitled

The Slovak artist Denisa Lehocká prepared an extensive series of organic objects, clusters of heterogeneity, specially for Kunsthalle LAB. These create what she calls a complex “spatial collage” in the location, leaving the exhibition space closed. It is a deep “window” that makes exhibition accessible to the public on the outside.

 

MATEJ GAVULA: Promenade

In front of the Kunsthalle Bratislava, in the area of Treskoňová Street, Matej Gavula installed the Promenade, a temporary layout of the stone fragments removed from the Danube embankment in Bratislava. They come from the so-called Matušík's wall, which is inscribed in the collective memory of the people of Bratislava as an iconic element of the promenade by the Danube.

 

KATARZYNA KRAKOWIAK: It is not night, yet

Through the walls and facades of Kunsthalle Bratislava mass laughter “explodes”. Its source is in thousands of recordings of the laughter of women and men from diverse countries, who support equal rights and freedom.

 

Potential Agrarianisms. Will There Still Be Sugar After the Rebellion?

EVA KOŤÁTKOVÁ: Get Used to My Body, I Live Quite Comfortably in It

Czech, internationally renowned artist, Eva Koťátková’s first solo exhibition at Kunsthalle Bratislava – stepping into the complex web of ongoing relations in the square – is presented on the ground level of the institution at Kunsthalle LAB, in direct contact with the surrounding environment through the large storefront windows.

 

NIKOLA ČIŽMÁROVÁ: Do You Remember How We Met?

The artwork located at Treskoňovej ulica near Kunsthalle Bratislava is concerned with the first meetings and memories of the artist and her friends. It consists of an object installation of ashtrays, as a dramatic evocation of the place where people interacted in public space. Part of the work is a sound recording, describing each of the situations from two points of view.

 

IGOR EŠKINJA: Exposures

The solo exhibition project for Kunsthalle Bratislava reflects Igor Eškinja’s interest in changing the narratives of the gallery premises and taking the specifics of the exhibition space as a main premise in the project.

 

GROSSI MAGLIONI: Beast Mother

The new exhibition project by the Italian duo Grossi Maglioni, created for Kunsthalle LAB, focuses on the examination of motherhood and its transformative potential. It centres on the persona of the mother with instinctive wild attributes, who protects her children and in the course of this action becomes a horrifying figure.

Jen Kratochvil has begun his work in Bratislava

As from February 1, 2021, Kunsthalle Bratislava officially has a new director. In a transparent selection process, the successful candidate was the well-known curator and critic Jen Kratochvil, active in Prague and Vienna. He has already begun giving practical effect to his vision, having travelled to Slovakia in February. Our visual art scene is not unknown to him; quite the contrary.

ROMAN ONDAK: SK Parking

Twenty years on, Roman Ondak has reinstalled his cult work SK Parking, which consists of a constellation of seven parked Škoda cars. He invites us to consider the following questions:  in what way is this work still topical today, and right here on this street?

RADOVAN ČEREVKA: Building a Real Body

This solo project, specially created for the Kunsthalle LAB space, represents the work of the Košice artist Radovan Čerevka in its latest development. His current cycle creates a complex environment, thematically focused on the cult of the body. One may also interpret it as a dystopian posthuman vision, brought to realisation in an expansive installation with an inner coherence.

 

New Video-profiles on Contemporary Slovak Visual Artists Are Being Produced for the ARTBASE Database

Thanks to a grant from the Bratislava City Foundation, which this year KHB managed to acquire at the maximum level, 6 video-profiles of contemporary Slovak visual artists are being produced for the ARTBASE online database. The project is accomplished in co-production with the Artdispečing.sk portal.

Kunsthalle Bratislava has been reopened to the public and is busy preparing the program for the second half of 2020

In light of the recently eased coronavirus measures, the exhibition space in Kunsthalle Bratislava has been reopened to the public since May 11, 2020.

Is There an East European Identity?

Kunsthalle Bratislava is opening an international exhibition entitled Orient2, curated by Michal Novotný, director of the Collection of Modern and Contemporary Art at the National Gallery in Prague. Orient2 is a collective exhibition, a more extensive continuation of the Orient project, made to measure for the first-floor spaces of Kunsthalle Bratislava. Elsewhere in Europe visitors were able to see it in several cultural centres during 2018, e.g. in Kim?

The Emotive Architecture of Žilvinas Landzbergas

Kunsthalle Bratislava will present a solo exhibition by the internationally respected Lithuanian artist Žilvinas Landzbergas at the beginning of July. His exhibition project is produced specially for the Kunsthalle LAB space. Art lovers have already been able to see Landzbergas’s work at the prestigious Venice Biennale in 2017, where he presented his installation R in the Lithuanian national pavilion.

The Perspectival Perception of Zorka Lednárová

Kunsthalle LAB presents a solo exhibition by Zorka Lednárová, a Slovak sculptor living in Berlin. Viewers have been able to see her visual works at many exhibitions at home and abroad. By way of example, let us recall her participation in EXPO 2000 in Hangzhou, China, where she received a prestigious invitation to create a work of sculpture, which was appreciated by Chinese art critics also. The opening of her exhibition entitled Perspective, curated by Lucie G.

Inverse Procedures in Contemporary Visual Culture

Kunsthalle Bratislava presents a wide-ranging exhibition entitled Inverse Romanticism, comprising works by five leading Czech and Slovak artists of the contemporary scene (Josef Bolf, Martin Gerboc, Jiří Petrbok, Ivan Pinkava, Richard Štipl). Using the media of photography, painting, drawing and sculpture, the artists elaborate the theme of “inversion”, which is present in a fundamental sense in their works and fulfils a critical role in relation to the present time.

Polygon Creative Empire presents its proposal for a (hitherto) fictive investment “megaproject” – Sissi Quartier

Kunsthalle LAB opens the 2019 season with Sissi Quartier. This is an interdisciplinary project by the Hungarian grouping Polygon Creative Empire, which comprises the artists Orsolya Bajusz and Virág Bogyó, the anthropologist Ágnes Patakfalvi-Czirják and the curator Kinga Lendeczki. Sissi Quartier is a continuation of Stopover – Ways of Temporary Exchange, a project premiered in May 2017 in the frei_raum Q21 exhibition space in MuseumsQuartier, Vienna.

What has Kunsthalle Bratislava prepared for 2019? /Plans and perspectives of KHB

This year, Kunsthalle Bratislava (KHB) will offer an extensive and dynamic program featuring attractive domestic and international exhibitions, as well as other contemporary visual art projects. A total of 8 large and also small exhibitions at Kunsthalle LAB, accompanied by numerous educational and editorial outputs, the public online database of contemporary art will grow, and a number of external cooperations is planned.

Kunsthalle Bratislava Presents a New Project ARTBASE – database of contemporary Slovak art

The idea of an online database is premised on the original definition of Kunsthalle Bratislava (KHB), as a Slovak centre of visual arts which also had the role of mapping and documentation of art, based on scholarly research. Having regard to the financial and operational difficulty of establishing and running a physical archive or library, KHB has come up with the new concept of a professional-standard online database.

OBJECTive

Kunsthalle Bratislava brings the year 2018 to a climax with an extensive exhibition, mapping the current state of 3D thinking on the Czech and Slovak visual art scenes. Vladimír Beskid’s curatorial project is presented on the centenary of the foundation of the 1st Czechoslovak Republic, and thus it celebrates a tradition, over one hundred years old, of objective art as a new medium. The opening will be held on Thursday, November 29, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.   

MILAN HOUSER: Connecting Point

Kunsthalle LAB presents a solo exhibition by the Czech visual artist Milan Houser, entitled Connecting Point. Viewers have previously been able to see his work at Colormetry, for example, his solo exhibition at the House of Art in Brno in 2016. Connecting Point is appearing as a complementary event to Vladimír Beskid’s curatorial project OBJECTive. The joint opening of both exhibitions will be held on Thursday, November 29, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at KHB, first floor.

KARINA SMIGLA-BOBINSKI: ADA, Independent Performer

Kunsthalle LAB, in cooperation with White Night, the international festival of contemporary art, presents an interactive exhibition by the Polish-German artist Karina Smigla-Bobinski, ADA, which has previously been shown to viewers in Brazil, USA, Great Britain, South Korea and Russia. The opening of the exhibition, curated by the director of the White Night festival, Zuzana Pacáková, will be held on Thursday, September 27, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Eagles & Doves

In August Kunsthalle Bratislava (KHB) will host a wide-ranging international exhibition entitled Eagles & Doves, which presents a selection of works by Slovak and German artists. The exhibition project came into being in cooperation with the Goethe Institut in Bratislava, which is celebrating 25 years of activity in Slovakia.

DAVID BÖHM – JIŘÍ FRANTA No One’s Going to Laugh!

Kunsthalle LAB presents a solo exhibition by the Czech artistic duo of Jiří Franta and David Böhm. They have worked in creative tandem since 2006, and during that time they have had numerous exhibitions at home and abroad. The launch of their latest exhibition, prepared specially for this space and curated by Pavel Švec, will be held on Wednesday July 4 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The exhibition will continue until September 2, 2018.
