KRIŠTOF KINTERA: Natural Nervosity

Although Kintera's works might be entertaining at the first glance, they bear an eerie paraphrase, raising questions of borderline existential and ethical issues of global society that keeps devastating itself. The trembling of trees, animals, or land is an answer to the man-made nature as the culture of the society. The outcomes of this crisis give life to mechanical sculptures and objects as tragicomic products of the flawed man-made nature.

How to overcome the fear of the unknown

The artist has invited Barbara Lášticová from Institute for Research in Social Communication, Slovak Academy od Sciences and Andrej Fidor from Faculty of Social and Economic Sciences, Comenius University in Bratislava. Several exercises will be introduced in the workshop, showing how diverse practices of contact with the refugees can help to eliminate “fear of the unknown”. Students of the European studies and international relations of the Comenius University will be participating in the workshop. Workshop will be held in Slovak and English language.

Accompanying program to exhibition Fear Of The Unknown

In cooperation with non-profit organisations and foreign partners we have organised an accompanying program prepared for the wider public and for refugees in cooperation with refugees and about refugees. The program provides a rare possibility of meetings and communication and tries to contribute to the transformation of “the unknown” into “the known”.

FEAR OF THE UNKNOWN

The refugee crisis that we are facing today is the most serious since World War II. Millions of people are forced to flee their homes due to armed conflict or extreme poverty. This situation has brought to our society a lot of uncertainty and it raises many questions. The experience of contact with other cultures is new and unknown for the countries of Eastern Europe. It has not yet been enough time to get to know each other. We are only at the beginning of a mutual dialogue. The exhibition Fear Of The Unknown is trying to overcome the barrier of non-communication.

CLEMENS FÜRTLER: Bildmaschine 07

The Austrian artist Clemens Fürtler creates image generating, kinetic objects, built out of model railway and freeway parts, the so called Bildmaschinen. He examines the filigree architectural structures of his works with vehicles moving through the sculptures. The locomotives and cars are equipped with miniatures cameras and light, producing videos and projections on the walls. The shadow plays and films explore new ways of experiencing and extending the limited space.

A Programme As a Tale

Director of La Criée centre d'art contemporain since September 2012, Sophie Kaplan has set since September 2013 a 3 years program entitled Courir les Rues (Running the Streets, 2013-2014), Battre la Campagne (Beating the Bushes, 2014-2015), Frendre les Flots (Breaking the Waves, 2015-2016) – titles taken from books of the French poet and mathematician Raymond Queneau.

JÁN MANČUŠKA: First Retrospective

Ján Mančuška (1972 – 2011) has never been considered a representative of the Slovak art scene, however, he always considered himself a Slovak artist living in Czechoslovakia and later in Czech Republic. The "First Retrospective" is the initial step to introduce his work to the domestic audience which has a unique opportunity to get familiar with his work, highly acknowledged internationally. The exhibition was curated by Vít Havránek and it was premiered in the Prague City Gallery.

NIKA OBLAK & PRIMOŽ NOVAK: And now for something ...

Nika Oblak & Primož Novak are an art collective from Slovenia. Since the year 2003, their practice focuses on critical examination of contemporary media and capital driven society by dissecting its visual and linguistic structure. They do this using kinetic objects, video and photography. Infused with humor their pneumatic video installations form the exhibition And Now For Something Completely Different 5. They expose the daily routine, artificially produced consumerist needs and illustrate our existence as the monotony of operating machines.

Could We Speak of "Bratislava Conceptualism"?

The international conference aims to publically introduce the term "Bratislava Conceptualism", serving as an umbrella term for the selected authorial programs that are part of or otherwise related to conceptual art in Slovakia, with Bratislava being the common denominator either in terms of territory (presence in the city), social psychology (e.g. generationally) or in terms of artistic operation (including studies, /non-/exhibiting, critical reflection of art, etc.).
